Flashback #38: Johannes Enders »Tribute to Pharoah Sanders«

"The Creator Has A Master Plan B" is the title of the recently released new album by the Johannes Enders Trio. Jazz nerds will probably prick up their ears at this title - after all, it is an unmistakable reminiscence of the great Pharoah Sanders and his iconic title "The Creator Has A Master Plan" from 1969.

And indeed: the eleven pieces by the bandleader from Leipzig are an unmistakable and at the same time grandiose tribute to his great role model Sanders. Alongside John Coltrane, Sanders was one of the outstanding protagonists of avant-garde jazz. Unlike many other representatives of the genre, his sound was never cool or heartless, on the contrary: his intensive engagement with the spiritual tradition of Africa ran through his work like a red thread and implicitly ensured that the "soul" was never lost in his music, despite all his dexterity.

The fact that Enders succeeds in doing this with his two fellow musicians - the Dutch bassist Joris Teepe and the American drummer Gene Calderazzo - is more than remarkable, and at the same time shows that people come and go, but their music remains.
