In her photographic road trip, photographer Anastasia Samoylova shows the Sunshine State of Florida as a shimmering fantasy and subtropical dystopia, marked as much by its deep political divisions as by the effects of the climate crisis. At the same time, Samoylova explores the sociocultural identity of the world-renowned swing state and shows how Florida is emblematic of the polarized present of the United States with its complex past.
Against the backdrop of this dichotomy of staged perception and reality, Samoylova employs strategies of commercial photography in her artistic practice to engage with themes such as environmentalism, consumerism and the picturesque. As a contemporary photographic artist, she breathes new life into the typical American genre of road trip photography and counters the traditionally male-dominated image of America with a female perspective.
