It's hard to believe what Fontaines D.C. have already achieved in their short history. The Irish post-punk band has conquered the charts, wowed audiences at international headline shows and major festivals and even been nominated for a Grammy - all in just five years!
The story of Fontaines D.C. begins in Dublin, where singer Grian Chatten, guitarists Carlos O'Connell and Conor Curley, bassist Conor Deegan and drummer Tom Coll met while studying music at university. Connected by their love of poetry, they published two books of poetry together, from which some song lyrics later emerged. This rather unconventional start to a punk band illustrates the band's tendency to do things differently than expected. Their debut album "Dogrel" was a direct breakthrough in 2019, thanks to their unique fusion of gritty post-punk sound with thoughtful and poetic lyrics about the Irish working class. Their second album "A Hero's Death" was released in 2020 and showed a more thoughtful and introspective side of the band - which was promptly rewarded with a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Album. This was followed in 2022 by the third album "Skinty Fia", which explored the band members' move to London and their identity as Irish in the UK. Fontaines D.C. remained true to their post-punk sound, but expanded it to include electronic influences. These new musical influences can also be heard on their most recently released single "Starburster", which announces the band's forthcoming fourth album - "Romance" will be released on August 23rd.
Fontaines D.C. have long since established themselves as one of today's leading post-punk bands and the voice of an entire generation. Their concerts are energetic, rousing experiences where no shirt stays dry. Their upcoming concerts in Germany promise to be musical highlights once again, giving fans the opportunity to experience the new songs from "Romance" live and be swept away by the band's unique performance.
