At Food & Footage, filmmakers and chefs come together every week to combine moving images with a three-course meal and bring current social, cultural and political topics to the table.
On June 11, we present Virtual Ritual by Jan Mocek - an original gaming performance that transports the audience into the immersive world of online multiplayer games. In it, virtual spaces mirror the structures of our real cities. The performance interweaves documentary approaches, digital aesthetics and scenic elements to reflect on social codes, urban architectures and behavioral patterns of digital societies. Following the performance, we will continue the discussion over a meal together and ask ourselves the question: What rules do we live by - online and offline?
Why deal with everyday problems, bad news and disasters - whether near or far - when you can lead a free, unrestricted life in the here and now? In a city where you simply reappear in a different neighborhood after death? Who needs the real world? Virtual Ritual is a digital urban trip through the virtual city of an online game in which millions of players log in and out every day. Rules apply here too - and these cities often resemble reality.
Urbanist Osamu Okamura, YouTuber Atlet and photographer and gamer Adéla Vosičková form an expert panel that sheds light on the invisible mechanisms, prototypes and rituals that shape the seemingly weightless world of MMOs. Which rules and norms apply - and which can be transgressed? How are digital cities designed to convey urban experiences? And what happens when we confuse virtual and real? Virtual Ritual is a bold promise: After this performance, you will see your city with different eyes.
