FOOD & FOOTAGE: Wie man Imperium buchstabiert

In the organizer's words:

At Food & Footage, filmmakers and chefs come together to combine moving images with a three-course meal - bringing current social, cultural and political issues to the table.

In this edition, we are showing "How to spell empire", an impressive documentary about a largely forgotten chapter of colonial history. During the First World War, 18,000 Tatars - Russian Muslims - were held in the German prisoner-of-war camp in Wünsdorf. The German authorities hoped to re-educate them ideologically and recruit them as Islamist fighters for their own political purposes. But instead of bowing to manipulation, the Tartars turned inwards: They educated themselves, established networks and developed a vision for a future without Russian foreign rule.

The film tells this story with great care and precision and shows how propaganda, captivity and resistance shape identities in the context of imperial power. It invites us to reflect not only on the past, but also on today's echoes of imperial aspirations - and on the importance of recognizing such patterns and countering them early on.
