Stephan Morgenstern "Wendejahre"
After around 30 years, we look back through the eyes of Stephan Morgenstern at one of the most exciting times that shaped Germany. He photographed his documentation of East German change for "Der Spiegel". He showed people's attitude to life up close and how reunification in particular turned everyday life completely upside down.
For over two years, the then Frankfurt photographer traveled through the wild East and showed what shocked people elsewhere or even left them speechless. His expressive black-and-white photographs tell of decline, liquidation and a spirit of optimism, of the formative legacy of everyday life in the GDR, of hope for freedom, travel and consumption, but also of the loss of home and the dark sides of a past that has never been dealt with and still casts its shadow today.
