Photo competition from July 01 to July 29, 2025

The elbsommer photo competition offers the unique opportunity to see your own photography in large format in the next OPEN ART exhibition on Überseeboulevard in HafenCity. How does it work? You have to take part in our photo competition with the theme "HafenCity in view - water and architecture". There are no limits to your creativity!

Upload your color photo to Instagram with the hashtag #fotosafari2025, tag @ueberseeboulevard_hafencity and follow the accounts @25hourshotels_hamburg and @ueberseeboulevard_hafencity and you're in. The participation period is July 1 to July 29 and the winning pictures will be presented to a wide audience on the Überseeboulevard open air for about six months from September 2025. Portrait workshops on July 26 and 27, 2025:

In this workshop you will learn how to get the perfect portrait. STERN photographer Oliver Hadji will show you his tips and tricks in the rooms of "Smile Eyes" with the support of a specially booked model. You will learn everything about optimal exposure, camera settings, the right technique etc. and can watch the photographer on a large screen. Of course, all participants can also pick up the camera themselves and put what they have learned directly into practice. It is not necessary to bring your own camera or special knowledge, but it is an advantage.

Photo walks on July 26 and 27, 2025:

We will meet at the Überseeboulevard marketplace in the northern Überseequartier and start our photo walk from here under the guidance of Oliver Hadji. On our discovery tour through HafenCity, we will not only focus our eyes and cameras on the obvious, but rather on the hidden and capture it with our cameras and lenses. The resulting photos can also be entered into this year's "elbsommer" photo competition, which is organized by Überseequartier and "Smile Eyes". Again, it is not absolutely necessary to bring your own camera, but at least a cell phone camera would be helpful.

About the course instructor Oliver Hadji:
Oliver Hadji has worked for many years as a photographer for internationally renowned magazines such as Stern, Vogue, Vanity Fair, Spiegel, Focus, and many more. He has worked as a photographer in his various home cities of Hamburg, New York and Paris. He created one of his most famous series about his own profession, portraying some of the most famous photographers. We are delighted that Oliver Hadji is supporting our format for the second time to share his knowledge and experience with you.

Artwalks on July 26 and 27, 2025

For the 31st time, Überseequartier presents the popular open-air photo exhibition "OPEN ART", this time with the theme "STADT IM FLUSS", a journey through time through Hamburg's youngest district over a 300-meter-long photo series with 50 different motifs by photographer Thomas Hampel. You can look forward to an exclusive guided tour with special insights and background information on the pictures.

About Thomas Hampel:
Thomas Hampel, born in 1955, has been photographing in the port since he came to Hamburg in the early 1980s. Fascinated by the free port, by ships and people from all over the world, by gigantic cranes and docks, by the change between general cargo and containers, he undertook extensive photographic explorations of the strange world behind the customs fence.
His preoccupation with the port and the city coast led to cooperation with the tourism industry, to commissions from cargo handling companies and shipping companies, and finally, in 1997, to the founding of the photo and design agency ELBE&FLUT in the Speicherstadt, which at the time was still slumbering in customs territory.
At this interface to the new, the team also developed its own projects such as books, photo calendars, the Quartier magazine and finally the HafenCity newspaper. The topics between history and tourism, city and city, warehouse and port were right on the doorstep: the Speicherstadt in transition to a world heritage site, HafenCity on its way to becoming a district, the port of Hamburg still among the 10 largest in the world and in the middle of it all a lively scene with lots of culture and pioneering spirit.
Since 2006, Thomas Hampel has been documenting the urban development of HafenCity in a constantly growing photo archive on behalf of HafenCity Hamburg GmbH. From the first buildings on Sandtorkai to the high-rise buildings in the Elbbrücken quarter, he has followed his motifs along the historic quaysides - city and photographer in flux.
