What is paradise? And what does our idea of it say about us?

Maria Stoyanova's documentary Fragments of Ice is an attempt to look into the past through her personal video archive. From 1986 to 1994, her father, a figure skater in the Ukrainian Ballet on Ice ensemble, filmed his tours abroad, his family life and the historical changes around him. The West looked fabulous in front of his lens, but at home he was confronted with a different reality - a half-destroyed country in the midst of the collapse of the USSR.
By researching her parents' archive, the director not only uncovers the family's history. Originally, she wanted to explore how people from the former Soviet bloc saw paradise - the West. But with the onset of the full-scale invasion, she became interested in another aspect - post-colonial identity. "How can we tell the world about ourselves without knowing who we are?" asks Maria Stoyanova.

Документальний фільм "Уламки льоду" Марія Стоянової - це спроба зазирнути у минуле через особистий відеоархів. Її батько, фігурист українського художньо-спортивного ансамблю "Балет на льоду", у 1986-1994 роках знімав на камеру закордонні гастролі, сімейне житття та історичні зміни навколо. Захід у його об'єктиві виглядав казково, а вдома на нього чекала інша реальність - напівзруйнована країна на тлі розпаду СРСР.

Досліджуючи батьків архів, режисерка розкриває не лише історію родини. Спершу вона прагла дослідити, як люди з колишнього радянського блоку бачили "рай" - Захід. Але з початком повномасштабного вторгнення її почав цікавити й інший аспект - постколоніальна ідентичність. "Як ми можемо розповісти про себе світові, не розуміючи, хто ми є?" - запитує Марія Стоянова.
