Riccardo loves Amelia, the wife of his secretary and best friend Renato. He wants to get close to her at the upcoming masked ball. He ignores the warnings of fortune teller Ulrica that he will soon be murdered.

In this masterpiece full of beautiful arias, duets and ensembles, Verdi weaves a brilliant web of conspiracy, love and deceit and impressively stages a historical event - the assassination in 1792 of the Swedish king and theater fan Gustav III at a masked ball in the Royal Opera in Stockholm, which he himself founded.
