The rich and miserly widower Harpagon keeps his daughter Elise and his son Cleante under very tight reins. His daughter Elise secretly loves Valere, who has been employed by Harpagon as a caretaker and financial advisor. His son Cleante loves Marianne, who lives with her sick mother in material hardship. However, before the children can take their father Harpagon into their confidence, he tells them that he will soon marry the beautiful Marianne himself and that he has already chosen wealthy candidates for his two children.
But Cleante is not so quick to admit defeat and is now looking for a way to win over the love of his life - against his father's wishes. Unexpected help comes from his friend La Fleche and the matchmaker Frosine.
