Freedom in letters. Two authors in dialog

In a personal and moving exchange of letters, two writers from Eritrea and Germany share their experiences of writing in different worlds. What does freedom mean in a dictatorship characterized by censorship and oppression? What does freedom mean in a global pandemic? Here, two committed women gently yet impressively discuss language and not being able to speak, home and exile, the everyday and the personal. The result is a mosaic of memories and insights into political and social conditions. Yirgalem Fisseha Mebrahtu was imprisoned and tortured for her critical work in Eritrea. She describes the consequences of censorship and persecution, the struggle for freedom of expression and the challenges of exile. Tanja Kinkel reflects on freedom in democratic societies and the responsibility to protect and further develop it. Following the reading, the authors invite the audience to reflect together on the role of writers* and activists* in building global solidarity. The focus will be on stories of FLINTA in crisis areas and the importance of gender justice in the fight for peace and human rights.

YIRGALEM FISSEHA MEBRAHTU, born 1981 in Eritrea, author and poet; co-founder of the Literary Club of Adikhey. She worked as a presenter at Radio Bana until she was imprisoned in 2009. After years of imprisonment, she has been living in Munich since 2018 as a fellow of the PEN Writers in Exile program. She has received several awards, including the Freedom of Speech and Expression Award and the Georg Elser Prize 2023. Dr. TANJA KINKEL, born 1969 in Bamberg, author and writer. Her works have been translated into numerous languages. She is a member of the German PEN, President of the International Feuchtwanger Society and is also a patron of the German Children's Hospice Association. In 1992, she founded the children's aid organization "Brot und Bücher e.V.".
