The legendary London Symphony Orchestra and its newly appointed conductor Sir Antonio Pappano form a unique combination of dream sound. The Briton, who grew up in the USA and has Italian roots, conducted the orchestra for the first time in 1996 for an opera recording and describes the experience as overwhelming. It was as if he was "driving a Ferrari and stepping on the gas pedal". The conductor and the LSO give a taste of this dynamic music-making at the Kulturpalast, where they welcome violinist Lisa Batiashvili as soloist in the first part of the concert, which is dedicated to works by Mozart. The charismatic and acclaimed artist is the perfect choice for the A major violin concerto by the Viennese classic, in which both heavenly melodies and ambiguous sounds shine through. The much-praised brilliant orchestral sound can then be unleashed in Berlioz's programmatic Mammoth Symphony, in which everything revolves around the amour fou of an unknown artist in five episodes.
