Even today, the Stasi's foreign intelligence (Hauptverwaltung A) is still surrounded by an aura. Former employees of HV A in particular cultivated the image of the "best secret service in the world" in publications and emphasized that they had nothing to do with the surveillance of their own population. This was possible above all because the documents of the HV A were largely destroyed - not in secret like many other Stasi files in the fall of 1989, but officially in the spring of 1990 with the consent of Stasi disbanders.
The tour provides an overview of how this decision came about and how exactly the HV A files were destroyed at the time. However, it also shows that many documents survived the destruction and that a great deal of knowledge about GDR espionage can be gained from other collections today.
After the tour, you can visit the Stasi Records Archive's collection of sample files and apply for access to the files directly on site.
The number of participants is limited to 15. Pre-registration is possible at: Einblick-ins-geheime@bundesarchiv.de or by telephone on 030 18 665-6699.
