Fujiko Nakaya: Nebelskulptur im Skulpturengarten

In the organizer's words:

In its sculpture garden, the Neue Nationalgalerie is presenting a new site-specific fog sculpture by Japanese artist Fujiko Nakaya, which plays monumentally and ephemerally around the iconic architecture of Mies van der Rohe.

Fujiko Nakaya was born in 1933 in Sapporo, Japan. In the 1960s, she became known as a member of the New York collective "Experiments in Arts and Technology" (E.A.T.) and eventually gained international fame for her immersive fog sculptures. Fujiko Nakaya developed her first fog sculpture for the 1970 EXPO World Exhibition in Osaka using a system that generated pure water mist.

Nakaya's fog sculptures transcend the traditional boundaries of sculpture by creating temporary and boundless transformations that engage the audience and give shape to the atmosphere. Her works invite visitors to encounter the natural elements in real time - in ephemeral, site-specific situations that dissolve the boundaries between nature and artistic creation.

For the Neue Nationalgalerie, Nakaya has developed a new installation that encompasses the entire sculpture garden. Various fog formations regularly start from selected sides of the garden, mingle with the trees and the stationary sculptures by Henri Laurens, Wolfgang Mattheuer or Alicja Kwade and finally move away from the center of the sculpture garden into the sky. The moving fog appears in varying densities - sometimes as an almost tangible volume, sometimes as a translucent veil.

Please note the following about Fujiko Nakaya's fog sculpture:

The sculpture starts on the hour between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Thursday until 7 pm.

The fog sculpture is active for 8 minutes. The doors to the sculpture garden remain closed during activation! Please enter the sculpture garden in good time.

Visibility may be severely restricted during the fog phase.
