Raised in Tamil Nadu and born in New York, critically acclaimed vocalist ganavya lives, learns and loves fluidly from the interplay of many approaches and understandings. Trained as an improviser, scholar, dancer and multi-instrumentalist, she maintains an inner library of "spi/ritual" blueprints provided by a cross-generational constellation of contributors, continually anchoring her practice in the past, present and future. She spent much of her childhood on the pilgrimage path, learning the art of storytelling "harikathā" and singing poems that criticize hierarchical social structures. Her latest album "Daughter of a Temple", released on Nils Frahm's label LEITER, draws on a wide range of contributors, including Esperanza Spalding, Vijay Iyer, Shabaka Hutchings, Immanuel Wilkins, Peter Sellars and many more. The result is an innovative and deeply moving blend of spiritual jazz and South Asian devotional music.
