Queer swing sound of the 20s & 30s for the "enchanted" and their friends - exclusively for Leipzig CSD 2025.
Long before the Stonewall Riots and the Gay Liberation Movement of the 1960s, there was a brief, liberal phase between the world wars in which LGBTQ culture and its music flourished in the major cities of America and Europe. A time when queer people did not yet confidently call themselves gay, lesbian, bi or trans everywhere, but sometimes simply "enchanted". However, this brief period of freedom came to an abrupt end in the mid-1930s on both continents, and many songs and artists were banished from cultural memory.
The Bad Mouse Orchestra presents a personal selection of these songs, which tell so much about hope, loss, splendor and love, and revives the swing sound of the 1920s and 30s. They also tell the story of these special pieces of music and their significance for the community at the time. Sometimes casual and cheeky with knickerbockers and slouch hats, sometimes elegant in the classic wardrobe of the time, the Bad Mouse Orchestra recalls the sound of the small, hidden bars and saloons where shimmy and Charleston were danced late into the night. They play instruments that are sometimes as old as the songs themselves.
In their program "DRUNK WITH LOVE", the Bad Mouse Orchestra brings American jazz classics and long-forgotten pieces as well as outlawed and banned songs back on stage.
