Gemeinsam Erinnern. Historische Gewaltkontexte und die Zukunft von Erinnerungskultur in Europa und Afrika

In the organizer's words:

Panel discussion with Prof. Dr. Dr. Prince Alexandre Kum'a Ndumbe III, Prof. Dr. Joël Glasman, Nicki K. Weber (moderator) and Prof. Dr. Mirjam Zadoff on the occasion of the International Day of Provenance Research on Wednesday, April 9, 2025 at 7 pm.

Colonialism and National Socialism are historically violent contexts that are linked in many ways and overlapped in time. Not least the provenance research, which is important for museums, as well as the question of the restitution of unlawfully acquired cultural property, shows the reciprocal impulses. Nevertheless, the two historical phenomena are largely remembered separately and have recently even been set against each other.

The panel brings together experts on the history of National Socialism and colonialism who will look for historical connections and ask about similarities and differences in both contexts of violence: Can and should colonialism and National Socialism be remembered together? What could this look like in the future?
