Due to its history, the Gewandhausorchester stands for civic engagement in a special way. With a view to the challenges of the present and the community-building, inspiring and transformative potential of music, it launched a democracy initiative in 2022. Since then, the opening of each Gewandhaus season has been linked to a current social issue that is musically accentuated and explored from different angles. After "Listening to each other" (2022) and "Resonance" (2023), the motto for 2024 will be "Polyphony ", which explores fundamental values, the understanding of democracy and social coexistence.
