Giorgio Moroder's Metropolis (35mm OV)

This science fiction classic reflects the fears and hopes of the 1920s about technology, power and social inequality and follows the daughter of the city's founder as she fights against the oppression of the working class by the ruling class. Numerous restorations of this UNESCO World Heritage Site have been attempted since the 1970s. Moroder's futuristic new edition combines its synthesizer sound with rock music by Freddie Mercury, Loverboy and Adam Ant. It contains lost scenes from the original and uses viragization and modern visual effects to revive Fritz Lang's expressionist drama. This makes Moroder's METROPOLIS a beat-driven hybrid of lived silent film history and monumental video clip.
Moroder's interpretation uses the virage effect, in which original black-and-white material is dyed in a single color in the bright areas of the image using special processes in order to additionally emphasize certain atmospheres or times of day: Blue tones emphasize the technological achievements of the city, while green and red tones contrast the extreme working situations underground.
