Johannes Brahms | Piano Trio No. 1 in B major op. 8
Peter I. Tchaikovsky | Piano Trio in A minor op. 50
Chamber music's crucial question: How do you feel about the piano trio? Peter Tchaikovsky rejected the genre outright, but was then inspired by the death of pianist Nikolai Rubinstein to compose a chamber music memorial to him in the form of a piano trio. Johannes Brahms was a completely different story: as an impetuous youngster, he set about composing his first work in this genre. As a mature master, he had nothing but laconic derision for it, but after 35 years he took it on again and created a fascinating synthesis of youthful freshness and masterful rigor. And Giuseppe Gibboni? He enthusiastically takes on both of the Romantic piano trio's pinnacle works in order to reappropriate them with Anton Gerzenberg and Anouchka Hack.
