A double requiem mass: Verdi wrote the final movement Libera me as early as 1868 in memory of Rossini, who died the same year, but his plan to inspire Italy's leading composers to compose a joint requiem ultimately remained a fragment. When the great poet Alessandro Manzoni died in 1874, Verdi completed the composition and created a work that became the epitome of musical confrontation with death, comparable only to Mozart's Latin Requiem or Brahms' German Requiem. "Libera me ..." - Who will not remember the final bars sung in unison in "pppp morendo"?
