Goethe's Faust as an interactive virtual reality experience

A classic of German literature in virtual form: with "Goethe VR", the German National Library is bringing Goethe's Faust I and II from the book to VR glasses. As an interactive virtual reality experience, one of the most famous literary works can be experienced in a completely new way in seven interactive scenes. Users are actively involved in the story: They sign the pact with Mephisto, travel to the witch's kitchen, meet Gretchen and search for the poodle's core.

In seven scenes, the players embark on a journey that is both literary and emotional. "Goethe VR" is set in a desert landscape whose minimalist expanse becomes a stage that also refers to the exploitation of nature by humans. In terms of content, the VR experience focuses on contemporary aspects and takes up passages that can be read as a reflection on modern man. Faust's relentless search for the new, his restlessness and the desire to experience the one perfect moment form the framework of this digital version of Faust. The integration of the original language of the work is an important part of the adaptation.

This creates a virtual world that corresponds to the literary model in terms of atmosphere and content and brings players closer to the themes of Faust I and II in a visually appealing way. "Goethe VR" will be available in nine languages: German, English, Arabic, Indonesian (Bahasa), Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Czech.

A production of ZDF Digital in cooperation with the German Book and Writing Museum of the German National Library, the Goethe Institutes and the Goethe Museum Düsseldorf, funded by the Federal Government's Computer Games Fund.
