The Colombian-Venezuelan singer, composer, producer and performer GOTOPO sees the future in her South American past. In her music and provocative shows, she interweaves folkloric string instruments with techno-inspired jams that reveal her Afro-indigenous heritage to create her unique "indigenous-futurist sound".
GOTOPO was born in Caracas, Venezuela. She began her musical training at the renowned music conservatory in the city of Barquisimeto. She only recently moved to Berlin, where she soon became involved as curator of the Resident Music Collective concerts at the Humboldt Forum. In her musical and artistic work, she tries to blur the boundaries between classical and club music, between science and pop culture.
"A step forward and a step back", she sings in her first single 'Malembe', which is about her search for her Afro-indigenous roots. And: "I have a hundred years of grief in my soul". The song is derived from an Afro-Venezuelan hymn with which slaves bid a spiritual farewell to their relatives who died at the hands of the slave owner. On her debut EP 'Sacúdete', she reinvents folkloric music and practices and fuses them with the electronics of Berlin's vibrant club scene. Her new tracks thrive on the energy of "positive feminism", driving basslines and songs that feel spiritual and sexy at the same time and carry the feeling of a revolution you can dance to. 'Sacúdete' was created in collaboration with Latin Grammy award-winning producer Don Elektron (aka Ulises Lozano), Simon Mejia (Bomba Estereo) and Robot Koch.
