It is Kirchner's woodcuts that bring the Bremen sound artist Michael Rieken back to the Kunsthalle Bremen after more than 20 years: in 2003, together with Wolfgang Michael, he realized a spectacular video-sound installation in the Hollweg Hall of the Kunsthalle. Now, for the exhibition Kirchner Woodcuts, he takes you back to the lively Berlin of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner: tangos, rumbas, New Orleans and Chicago jazz were omnipresent in Kirchner's studio and the underground entertainment venues of the 1910s and 1920s. With his collection of shellac records and the gramophone, Rieken brings the expressionist street and dance scenes in the exhibition acoustically to life.
