17 years after his stay in the once luxurious Grand Budapest Hotel, which now looks more like a ruin, a writer with writer's block tells what the owner of the former luxury hotel confided to him about the eventful fate of his house. He lets the author in on the secret of how he went from nameless employee to hotelier. It all began with his old superior Gustave, who had an affair with the elderly, very wealthy Madame D.. When the lady died at the age of 84, she bequeathed her lover an expensive work of art, a clause in her will that her relatives were not prepared to accept without complaint. The theft of his inheritance marks the beginning of Gustave's decline as a businessman... (v.f.)
