Gravity’s Rainbow: Künstler*innengespräch

In the organizer's words:

moderated by Nicola E. Petek

The Hungarian art historian Laszlo Glozer spoke of the "exit from the picture" when looking back on the second half of the 20th century. First, the frame of the picture as a limitation was overcome, later the boundaries between painting, installation and sculpture were dissolved and painting was extended into space.

The group exhibition Gravity's Rainbow shows twelve current artistic positions that examine painting within and beyond the classical boundaries of the picture from today's perspective: from panel paintings and wall objects to colorful sculptures and site-specific installations. The artists negotiate parameters of painting such as picture surface, picture carrier, materiality, spatiality and surface in various ways.

By engaging with the exhibition space and its social and societal context, the artists develop site-specific works that respond to the specific conditions of the gallery. The interweaving of urban space and art space causes a shift in perception that questions the relationship between art and reality. Further shifts take place with the use of "non-painting" materials such as advertising tarpaulins, plastic or building materials.

The artists in the exhibition enter into a dialog with the gallery space and create a spatial collage in which the works in the interior visually overlap with the urban environment.

The title is borrowed from Thomas Pynchon's novel Gravity's Rainbow (German title: Die Enden der Parabel). It refers to aspects such as changes in perspective, shifts in perception and the interplay between reality and fiction.
