With extravagant outfits somewhere between androgynous Blitzkids and UFO sect, Drab Majesty cause a stir in the synthwave scene with lots of fabric and make-up. Their impressive stage shows also contribute to this: They sometimes appear on the blue stage fog in stylish rococo costumes à la Amadeus.
Drab Majesty was originally founded in sunny California as a solo project by multi-instrumentalist Andrew Clinco. The young Andrew came into contact with the music of Siouxsie & The Banshees, Red Lorry and Felt at an early age. After getting his first taste of the stage as a drummer in a neo-goth band, he wanted to create something with his solo project that encompassed both sound and visuals. He creates the alter ego Deb DeMure and the multi-layered world of Drab Majesty.
First mixing 80s-influenced new wave with shrill, echoing guitars and ethereal synth leads, he released the EP "Unarian Dances" in 2012 in a limited edition of 100 tapes, inspired by a UFO cult from the 50s. After the debut "Carless" in 2015, Deb meets keyboardist and singer Mona D (Alex Nicolaou) and the two quickly become congenial partners. While their sound earned them comparisons with synth and wave legends such as Xymox, Depeche Mode and Cocteau Twins, they dug particularly deep lyrically, as on 2017's "The Demonstration". Here, too, Deb couldn't let go of the UFO phenomenon, as the concept album deals with the psychology of the mass suicide of the "Heavens Gate" sect, in which 39 sect members took their own lives and then went on an intergalactic journey.
This was followed in 2019 by "Modern Mirror", which the two recorded in Athens and for which they also tackled an ancient theme in the form of Ovid's "Narcissus". Their futuristic synth-pop is broken up on songs such as "Ellipsis" and "The Other Side" and is sometimes reminiscent of guitar greats such as Johnny Marr and Bernard Sumner. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, Clinco took part in a side project, VR Sex, before resuming his collaboration with Nicolaou in Drab Majesty. The band's next project was not another album, but a four-song project "An Object in Motion", was released in 2023 and featured the tranquil guitar song "Vanity", which delights with misty beauty and a duet by Clinco with Rachel Goswell, the singer of Slowdive.
