10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 ... the big bang. Or should we say the big heat, flood, earthquake, forest fire? It's getting hot on the planet. Soon so hot that we could have temperatures of up to 45 degrees Celsius in Berlin. Then even drinking an iced coffee with oat milk from a recycled cup with a paper straw will be a challenge - because the ice cubes will melt within ten minutes and disintegrate the paper straw so that nothing will come out. Then our Birkenstocks melt through on the street.
Sounds like a prophecy of doom for society. That doesn't have to be the case - after all, there is the so-called "openness to technology" that parties used to woo voters during the election campaign. However, this means nothing other than: "You don't have to give up your current standard of living. You don't have to do without - no! You just have to wait until we develop something that is not as harmful as the current one. Will it be too late then? Probably." It's hard to be more pessimistic about the future. But in view of the widespread resignation regarding climate change and the increasingly prominent deniers of it, there is hardly any other way to put it.
Being a young person at this time seems hopeless. Your own future and the privileges of Western Europe are at stake. As a student, this is difficult to cope with. What should we do to ensure the protection of our own existence and that of animals and plants?
The group exhibition "Countdown", which can be seen from 21.05. to 18.06.2025 at the Department of Design at Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences in Lampingstraße 3, examines the causes: individual mobility, light pollution, the use of raw materials, the wasteful lifestyle of the western world, neglected infrastructure as well as air and environmental pollution.
