HafenSounds Festival | Sommer Köln

In the organizer's words:

The third edition of HafenSound once again shines with highlights from Cologne's international music scene

An astonishing variety of bands and projects flourish in the niches of the metropolitan region, allowing us to take a two-day trip around the world at the Chocolate Museum without having to leave the Rheinauhafen. This time, the sound journey will take us to North and East Africa, the Balkans, Iran, Cuba and Brazil. The various acts and their performance times can be found under Dates.
The cosmopolitan, informal festival is curated and presented by Jan Krauthäuser.

The program:

Saturday, 03.08.2024 on the square in front of the Chocolate Museum

Walking act
Kwaggawerk (Cologne, Swiss style)
Inspired by Swiss Guggenmusik, Reto Stadelmann founded the Kwaggawerk art orchestra in Cologne in 2006. It brings together up to 50 amateur musicians in a mobile task force with wind and rhythm instruments. Conductor: Roman Aragorn Söntgerath.

4:30 pm
Leyla's friends (Maghreb)
Café Casablanca in Humboldt Gremberg is an institution in Cologne's North African oasis Taunusstraße and has even produced a wonderful session band. Leyla's friends play Arabic songs with funk, soul and some fresh Moroccan mint!

17:30
[Artist to be announced]

18:30
Melane (Cologne, Congo etc.)
Cologne-based singer Melane has already performed on stage with stars such as Tony Allen, Manu Dibango and Gentleman. After her successful debut album "Four" (ACT) with the jazz trio "Three Fall", the singer decided to launch a solo career and continue telling her own musical story. This reflects her love of different styles and rhythms (Congolese rumba, Afro-pop, jazz and soul) - the sounds of her cultural roots.

7:30 pm
Roda de Samba do Alemão (Brazil)
Roda de Samba is the name of a traditional samba session in Rio de Janeiro, which also takes place here in Cologne thanks to the large, lively Brazilian scene with many good musicians. Nego Dó, Chris Quade Couto, Jonivon Freitas, Maxim Zettel, Yan Klosterkemper and Tam Silva will give us an atmospheric taste of this with various drums and string instruments.

Sunday, 04.08.2024 on the square in front of the Chocolate Museum

Walking Act
Avangard Brass Band (Balkan-Roma)
The Balkan-Roma brass band of the young trumpeter Kamber Kanturski stands for furious village festivals in Serbia or North Macedonia, as well as passionate wedding parties in the Rhineland.

4:30 pm
Cainã Araújo Trio (Brazil)
The singer and accordionist Cainã Araújo is a virtuoso master of forró, the increasingly popular village dance music of north-east Brazil. He is accompanied by bass drum, zabumba and the essential forró triangle! Traces of polka, tango, quadrilha, indigenous and African musical traditions can be found in this universally accessible music.

5:30 pm
MaryamAkhondy & Banu (Iran)
Maryam Akhondy, founder and director of the world's only Iranian women's choir Banu, is one of the virtuosos of classical Persian vocal art and also won the prestigious WDR Jazz Prize in 2023. With Banu, she is dedicated to the tradition of Tehran's kitchen songs, which celebrate a fun-loving, free counter-image to the current mullah dictatorship.

6:30 pm
Syavash Rastani Quartet (Global)
Brazil, Peru, Iran, Belarus: four musicians from different backgrounds come together for a musical encounter in the heart of Cologne. Daniel Oetz Salcines combines the Peruvian bass with the sounds of Brazil, arranged for the piano by Henrique Gomide. Clarinettist Roman Kushniarou devotes himself to free improvised music as well as classical music. The Brazilian compositions with even and odd rhythms also form the bridge to Syavash Rastani's percussion interpretation on his traditional Persian instruments.

7:30 pm
L@s Rumb@ler@s (Cuba etc.)
The new, top-class German-Cuban quartet sounds the tension between rumba and bolero - sometimes for dreaming, sometimes compellingly for dancing. Cast: Claudia Ramos Barreto, violin, vocals; Reinel Ardiles Lindemann, trumpet, vocals; Daniel Oetz Salcines, bass; Roland Peil, percussion.

August 03 and 04 from 16:30 in front of the Chocolate Museum, free of charge!
