Outstanding architecture in the south of Cologne
The villa suburb of Hahnwald was built on fields and meadows 110 years ago. The American dentist
dentist Harvey Cotton Merrill (1862-1953) had an estate built there in 1913. His
son Theodor became the initiator of further building development. From the end of the
1920s, spacious villas belonging to wealthy Cologne citizens were built on plots of at least
plots of at least 1000 square meters.
In addition to many Victorian-inspired dream villas, the 3 km² area also features
outstanding architecture by Joachim Schürmann, Peter Neufert and Hans Schilling. And
let's take a look at them.
House X1 in Cologne-Hahnwald, Am Zehnpfennigshof 9, is a listed residential
listed residential building that the architect Peter Neufert built as his own residence in
residence in 1961-1962. It is considered Cologne's most unusual residential building. Photo: Nicole Delmes
