Theater Essen-Süd dares to tackle William Shakespeare's epic and brings it to the stage in a modern version. Shakespeare's timeless classic shines in a new guise and impresses with the absolute topicality of its themes.
Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, receives the news of the sudden death of the king, his father. He hurries home and arrives just in time for his mother's wedding to Uncle Claudius. This sudden change gives him pause for thought. His father's ghost appears to him at night, accuses Claudius and his mother of murder and asks Hamlet to avenge him. In order to find out whether the ghost is not leading him astray, Hamlet decides to pretend to be insane. He has the actors who have just arrived rehearse a play for him, which he intends to perform to catch the new king as if in a mousetrap, for the scene is as the ghost has described the murder to him. Hamlet believes he has gained certainty through the king's sudden departure at the most fateful point. Nevertheless, his hesitant mind cannot summon up the energy to take revenge. He tries in vain to deceive himself about his weakness with philosophical questions about being or not being...
