Summer vacation is finally here, and 10-year-old Emma can hardly wait to spend it with her grandma Dolly in the country. She is looking forward to seeing her friends, her grandma and Mississippi, the neighbor's mare. But the idyll is suddenly spoiled when the young girl discovers that the neighbor has died and Mississippi is to be sold: to the butcher. It is clear that Emma cannot allow this to happen. Together with her grandmother, she buys Mississippi from the neighbor's nephew. But the very next day, the neighbor wants the horse back, and an exciting tug-of-war begins.
