Händel: »Brockes-Passion«

310 years after its composition, Handel's popular "Brockes Passion" will be performed for the first time with a star cast in the Elbphilharmonie's Great Hall. The "Brockes Passion" is the only sacred work by Handel in the German language. With its operatic and rousing character, Handel's "Brockes Passion" is also a true rarity among passions in musical terms.

The libretto of the Passion was written by Barthold Heinrich Brockes, an important Hamburg poet who was also an alderman and senator in Hamburg. His Passion with the original title "Jesus martyred and dying for the sins of the world" made the Hamburg native world-famous. With more than 10 settings, the "Brockes Passion" is the most frequently set Passion text in the German language.

The setting by George Frideric Handel is the most famous and most popular setting of this Passion. Handel's "Brockes Passion" was also performed by Joseph Haydn in Vienna and Johann Sebastian Bach in Leipzig, among others. Bach even had a copy of the work made, which today is one of five surviving copies. Fortunately - because the original score from Handel's pen is lost.

The premiere performance in the Elbphilharmonie will be presented by a top-class star cast. Star soprano Julia Lezhneva is internationally acclaimed. The New York Times praises her voice as "angelic". Opera star Carolyn Sampson performs regularly at the BBC Proms, among others. She will also be joined by leading soloists Benedikt Kristjánsson, Fabio Trümpy and Edward Grint.

The PRJCT Amsterdam orchestra, conducted by its founder Maarten Engeltjes, has been delighting audiences with its refreshing enthusiasm since 2017 and is one of the most exciting orchestras for early music. The Flemish Radio Choir is one of the most renowned choirs in Europe and will soon be celebrating its 90th anniversary.
