Hansel and Gretel" concentrates the fascinating elements of fairy tales - without a princess's castle: an enchanted forest, dark magic that is overcome by human cleverness and courage, romantic creatures such as dew and sandmen and - a happy ending. It all begins with a family's bitter need. And, as is usually the case, the children feel it the worst. Instead of playing and romping around, they have to work around the house. The mother's guilty conscience after a thunderstorm and the two siblings' greed for sweets could just as easily come from the year 2024.

Humperdinck's music envelops its listeners like a warm blanket in moments like these. The soft orchestral colors and exuberant songs contain the unshakeable consolation that there is a way out of every situation.
