A colorful house made of gingerbread in the middle of the forest, where two hungry children seek refuge. But there lives a wicked witch with scary baking recipes. Engelbert Humperdinck's best-known opera is full of contrasts, both on stage and in the music. It combines popular children's songs with the sound of a Wagnerian orchestra, creating a fairytale world of sound that captivates audiences of all ages. The fairytale opera, in which the siblings successfully overcome danger together, returns to the stage in Jürgen Rose's production from 2005.
The new Cologne GMD Andrés Orozco-Estrada conducts.
