Mare is the story, written for novel and theater, of Maria (called Mare) Wiesbeck. She lived with her sister, brother, parents and grandfather on a farm in the Chiemgau Alps below the Geigelstein. When she was about seventeen years old, she was heartbroken and left the farm for an alpine pasture attached to the farm, where she lived in an alpine hut in the simplest of conditions. Mare worked there as a dairymaid, i.e. she tended the cattle from the family farm and also the cattle from other farms, milked the animals twice a day and made cheese and butter from the milk.
Normally, the dairymaids and dairymen would return to the valley for the fall and winter after working on the alpine pasture. But not Mare Wiesbeck, she stayed up there on her alp all her life.
