16-year-old Oshare cannot accept the fact that her widowed father wants to marry a new wife and decides to spend the summer with six friends at her aunt's country house. The group is warmly welcomed by her, but it soon becomes clear that the opulent estate has a life of its own. Nobuhiko Obayashi, who made his commercial film debut in 1977 with Hausu after numerous experimental and advertising films, uses every available special effect to create a surreal work that is pervaded by deep melancholy despite its eccentric staging.
