Christine "Lady Bird" McPherson's (Saoirse Ronan) everyday life in Sacramento, California, consists of high school routine, family troubles and her first sobering experiences with boys. So it's no wonder that the 17-year-old dreams of growing up. In real life, she rebels against the confines of her parents' home with passion and stubbornness. But of course her mother (Laurie Metcalf) doesn't make it too easy for the headstrong, bright teenager to cut the cord, and so both of them repeatedly pull out all the emotional stops between defiance, anger and resignation.
