Keller Dover (Hugh Jackman) is a Bible-thumping war veteran. The tough guy has both feet firmly on the ground. But Dover's world comes apart at the seams when his six-year-old daughter Anna (Erin Gerasimovich) and her friend Joy are kidnapped at Thanksgiving. A feverish search begins, led by the young and ambitious police officer Loki (Jake Gyllenhaal), whose primary goal, however, is to finally escape the small town and be transferred to a big city after successfully completing the investigation. But all leads in the kidnapping case come to nothing. Loki also has to let the only suspect, the mentally retarded Alex Jones (Paul Dano), go due to a lack of evidence. The father of the family, Dover, then makes a momentous decision: he wants to find out the truth on his own and embarks on a fateful and merciless path of vigilante justice in order to perhaps find the two little girls after all.
