In her novel Heimsuchung , Jenny Erpenbeck tells the story of almost one hundred years of German history - from the end of the German Empire to reunification - using the example of a house and its inhabitants. In search of a home, everyone tries to make a home for themselves at Scharmützelsee. But no one is allowed to stay in their supposed paradise for long. Political circumstances repeatedly break into the idyll and drive the inhabitants away from this place. Everything is in a constant state of flux. Only the nameless gardener lends this idiosyncratic chronicle a certain constancy in the annual performance of his activities.

The fates of the people who live in or visit the house by the lake reflect the existential tension between individual aspirations and being at the mercy of fate. While the individual characters mostly remain anonymous, the author lends each story its own poetic tone. The result is the linguistic music of a century full of searching and longing, flight and expulsion, fleetingness and moments that change lives forever.

The LUTZ team takes up this sound and, together with musicians from the Hagen Philharmonic Orchestra, develops a theater evening between concert, reading and intense scenic moments, which above all give space to personal fates and offer an emotional approach to this narrative about the 20th century.
