He began his medical career at the Charité in Berlin and completed his doctorate at the Friedrich Wilhelm University in Bonn. He is a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the German AIDS Foundation. He was a member of the Corona Expert Council of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the German government.
