Puppet theater in a stage version by Philip Stemann Siddhartha embarks on a quest for knowledge and the meaning of life. He leaves his home and family to learn strict asceticism. After a short time, however, he realizes that this life will not bring him to his goal. So he makes a pilgrimage to Buddha, the Sublime One. Not satisfied with his teachings, he moves on and is ferried across the river by the ferryman Vasudeva in order to reach the city. There he meets the beautiful Kamala, becomes an assistant to a rich merchant, accumulates wealth himself, falls into a gambling addiction and finally loses everything. Only at the end of his life, when he returns to the ferryman, does he recognize his self and his happiness in the great river.Hermann Hesse's novel tells the story of a young man who must learn on his journey that awareness and knowledge cannot be achieved through teachings or masters, but only through his own experiences.
