Heroines of Sound 2025

Feminist, diverse, cross-genre: the Heroines of Sound festival has been presenting early and current heroes of electronic sound since 2014. From July 10 to 12, 2025, the twelfth edition of the festival will explore different sound languages and perspectives. Uncompromising sounds reflect the current crises of our time: in the face of historical, geographical and political dogmas, Heroines of Sound pleads in concerts and performances for border crossings that not only expand the artistic terrain.

The Finnish performance group Oblivia sheds light on the effects of the impending climate collapse with grotesque comedy and casual vitality. The renowned Meitar Ensemble from Tel Aviv brings together current works by Iranian, Israeli and German composers. On the last day of the festival, the brass ensemble Apparat will present a new version of the large-scale composition "Souvenir" by Sarah Hennies, a New York artist whose personal and psychologically exploratory approach captures the complex contradictions of transfeminine experience.

With outstanding electronic musicians such as Rojin Sharafi and Yara Mekawei, who combine their characteristic sound languages with mythologies and narratives from their countries of origin, the program focuses on the experimental music scene of the SWANA region. The international composer-performer scene is represented with performances conceived especially for the festival - including by Viola Yip, Camilla M. Fehér, Chikiss and Augustė Vickunaitė.

Heroines of Sound was initiated by Bettina Wackernagel and a group of artists from the Berlin scene with a feminist agenda. Outstanding early works as well as forward-looking positions by younger artists will be performed. The idea is to make the connecting lines of different genres tangible and to continuously strengthen the presence of FLINTA artists in the art and music scene.
