HfK Jazzclub: Hammond sings the Blues

Blues, jazz and funk at the HfK Bremen

When the last birthday of the aged Hammond B3 organ lady was celebrated, a long-cherished wish of Klaus Möckelmann was fulfilled, namely to finally play his favorite instrumentals again in a classical line-up.

On Tuesday, January 21, "Hammond sings the Blues" will be performing there. The pianist and Hammond B3 player Klaus Möckelmann has been touring with various blues, soul and funk bands for years. His particular love was for Hammond B3 instrumentals. His long-cherished wish to form an instrumental organ trio again with his favorite pieces came true in 2024. At a gig together with Fred Drobnjak (guitar), Jonathan Frach (drums) stepped in to help out. They grooved straight away and it was quickly decided to continue working with this line-up.

The common and cross-generational love for various grooves such as funk, shuffle, swing and blues, as well as the sometimes underestimated great jazz classics are on the program. The focus is on the blues, which runs through the program completely undogmatically in all possible variations.
Well-known classics by Jimmy Smith, Jack MC Dough, Groove Holmes, Bruce Cats, Ronny Earl, as well as newer jazz fusion-inspired blues variations by Ronny Jordan or Bob Berg, and a few numbers from the "great american songbook", but also their own compositions are on the program.

The "hfk jazzclub" is the venue for contemporary jazz in Bremen. Concerts and sessions with musicians from the university and local and national musicians take place every Tuesday of the semester at 9 pm in the basement vault of the University of Music. Passionate jamming takes place here, or student tryout programs are presented. Semester projects by the Rehearsal Band and themed concert programs are also offered. In short: a think tank for jazz and a meeting place for Bremen's jazz scene.
