In its studio exhibition in the Bamberg Historical Museum, the Bamberg Historical Society displays highlights from its extensive collections. The aim is to regularly focus on different objects in order to do justice to the diversity and significance of the rich collection.
This year's theme is "Guilds and Crafts". Since the Middle Ages, independent craftsmen and tradespeople have joined together in a mostly profession-specific community of interest, which regulated dealings within the so-called guild with binding rules and laws. The strict guild system was only finally abandoned with the introduction of academic training in artistic professions and later the freedom of trade in the 19th century.
Numerous documents relating to various guilds have been preserved in the collections of the Historical Society. In general, only the representative and therefore sought-after guild stores are known. In this year's studio exhibition, exhibits will be shown that could be part of the contents of the guild stores, but which, isolated from them, may seem unknown and almost forgotten.
Founded on July 8, 1830, the association now has almost 900 members. It deals with the history of the former Bamberg Abbey from prehistory to contemporary history. Among other things, the association owns a large collection of art and cultural history objects. During the first 40 years of the association's history in particular, numerous donations were received, especially from the wealthy members of the population: prehistoric finds, coins and medals, manuscripts and books, prints, paintings and works of art. The association's current priority is the restoration and cataloging of its extensive collection. Parts of the collection are kept by the museums of the city of Bamberg and are included in the exhibitions of the Historical Museum.
Good partnership
The relationship with the Historical Museum is a happy one for both sides. The Historical Museum can display items from the Historical Society's collection, provided they correspond to the museum's current concept, and the Society has the right to use the museum depot. This therefore offers advantages for both institutions. As a result, the HV has been able to present many small and large exhibitions in the Historical Museum to the public. Examples of this are the exhibitions on the 175th anniversary of the association or the one on the modeller Carl Schroppwith his papier-mâché altars and church models, for which the former head of the city archives, Dr. Robert Zink, spent almost two years researching. It is not always easy to prepare exhibitions on the side when all the people involved are volunteers who all work professionally.
