On August 6, 2025, the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, the German-Japanese Society Dortmund and the IPPNW Dortmund invite you to a moving memorial event on Hiroshima Square.
August 6 and 9, 1945 mark a turning point in the history of mankind: the first - and so far only - atomic bombs dropped on inhabited cities claimed over 92,000 immediate lives, with around 130,000 more dying in the following months from the horrific long-term effects. To this day, the survivors - the hibakusha - suffer from the physical and psychological scars of this crime against humanity.
Eight decades later, the message is more relevant than ever: nuclear weapons mean immeasurable suffering - and must never be used again. In view of global tensions and escalating wars, the risk of nuclear conflict is more real today than ever before.
The event invites all citizens to come to terms with history, to listen to the warning voices of survivors - and to join together to set an example for peace, humanity and disarmament.
Come and join us. Remember with us. And set an example.
Because those who remember change the future.
