Dream play, portrait of an artist and meta-theater - Jacques Offenbach's great, unfinished opera shimmers in many facets. Based on stories by the Romantic poet E.T.A. Hoffmann, the artist Hoffmann finds himself as the protagonist of his own (love) stories after separating from his lover Stella, with reality and fiction merging.

Fragmentations, mirror images and doppelgangers challenge Hoffmann's perception. Polish director Krystian Lada assembles these fragments into a psychologically gripping operatic fantasy. Unfulfilled yearnings and unreliable memories, physical and psychological wounds become the driving force behind a fairytale-like, grotesque vision that changes as much as Offenbach's music.
