Weekend course: Building a solid wood wall shelf with a linoleum shelf
In this course, we combine wood with linoleum - a sustainable and versatile material. Linoleum is made from natural raw materials such as linseed oil, resin and cork flour. Mounted on jute fabric, it serves as a sustainable floor covering, while in furniture making it is used as a variant on paper. We use this furniture linoleum to provide the shelf of a small wall shelf with a colorful yet robust surface. You will have the opportunity to choose from a variety of colors to create your personal, handmade piece.
Course content
In this course you will work with a mixture of hand tools and machines. To begin, you will be given a set of cut-to-size planks of light-colored wood. You then choose a cross brace from a wood of your choice and select a linoleum blank. First, glue the linoleum to a carrier board and press it in place with screw clamps.
While the glue dries, we turn our attention to the shelf sides: We cut a notch in the sides of the shelf in order to fit the cross brace - this is where the Japanese saw and chisel come into play. Drill precise holes for the suspension using the upright drill and hammer in the brackets.
Now you have the opportunity to try out the edge sander to round off your shelf sides. Once the linoleum board has been cut flush, we use a special milling machine to mill slots for the flat dowels that will connect the shelf sections stably. Before the shelf is glued together, we sand all the surfaces smooth and smooth out the edges.
After applying the glue, the shelf is fixed in place with screw clamps. During the drying time, we take a short break for refreshments. Then I'll share some theoretical knowledge with you. At the end, you sand your shelf from the outside - done!
I'll give you a set of dowels and screws to take home with you so that you can attach your shelf directly to the wall.
