A temporary collective of artists reclaim Shakespeare’s characters of color

By QUEERDOS Kollektiv

Language: English, Farsi, German…

“I will a round unvarnished tale deliver/Speak of me as I am,” declares Shakespeare's Othello. But whose tale? Whose truth? A temporary collective of artists—both professional and amateur—reclaim Shakespeare’s characters of color (Caliban, Othello, and Cleopatra) to stage a radical act of self-authorship from the margins. The actors reclaim their situated knowledge, typically erased from Eurocentric stagings and reception of these plays. Through the experience of queer migrant care and service workers, academics and activists, Shakespeare’s words become tools of transformation, foreshadowing a resistant counter-futurity through polyphonic and collaborative dramaturgy.
