Ibaaku live at Gaswerk Music Days 2025
A self-described sonic worlds builder, Ibaaku explores the potentials of audio through collaborative, interdisciplinary work that intersects with fashion, performance art, and technology. Emerging in the early 2000s from Dakar's hip-hop scene as a rapper, producer, and singer, he became a key figure in the city's alternative movement, contributing to collectives like LZ3, Iscience, and Les Petites Pierres. Since 2016, Ibaaku has been a rising presence in Africa's electronic and experimental music scenes, known for his imaginative soundscapes and boundary-pushing performances. In 2020, he co-founded Kenu: Lab'Oratoire des Imaginaires, an art space dedicated to the social practices, ancestral knowledge, and mythologies of Ouakam society. More recently, he launched Miziku Tey Records with Alibeta - the first music label dedicated to contemporary and electronic music from Senegal.

His latest project, Jóola Jazz, is a hypnotic intersection of electronic music, spiritual jazz, and the musical traditions of Casamance - an intertextual exploration rooted in Jóola culture, its codes, rhythms, and cosmologies. Blending ancestral echoes with the pulse of the African club scene, it stands as Ibaaku's most fully realized sonic experiment to date.

The first festival date highlights artists from the Nyege Nyege sphere alongside other African and local voices. Gaswerk Music Days (12.07. - 19.07.) is the summer music festival organized by Gaswerksiedlung Berlin and taking place in its lush gardens, BLOCK1 event space, and creative studios. The event unites experimental electronics, African sounds, jazz, noise, avant-pop, kraut, improvisation and dance music under its "Radical Live Music" flag, binding and crossing genres in a program with over 20 acts on 2 stages.
